Is a Picture Really Worth a Thousand Words?

A couple of months ago I was asked this question on my Facebook page “What are more powerful for you as an author? Words or pictures?”

This was my response.

“I think pictures grab a person's immediate attention; however, for some people the attention is brief. Some may look at a picture of wildflowers and see weeds while others see beauty in their shape and colour. Words, on the other hand, make things easier to understand (for the most part). Take for instance a picture of a dragonfly. Some may find it a beautiful insect others see just a bug. But add the quote "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." (Vicki Corona) and it becomes something deeper and more meaningful. However as an artist I will say that I find both words and images equally powerful.”

There are many powerful images that need no words and there are many wonderful words that need no image. However, sometimes combining the two can make an even more powerful statement.

What do you think? What impacts you more – images or words?

Change is good.
